10:35 - 11:55 am

Creativity and Technology: Exploring AI Uses in the Language Classroom (AH 330)
Meredith Bricker (University of Michigan - ELI)
Educators value the importance of harnessing technology to create creative, relevant instruction. However, finding opportunities to engage with emerging technology and discuss its classroom uses can be challenging. In this workshop, participants will share ideas and explore techniques for using ChatGPT or other generative AI tools in the language classroom.

Interest Sections: Adult Education, K-12, Post-Secondary, Technology

Recognizing Diverse Listening Styles to Enhance Classroom Communication Through Student Self-Awareness (AH 331)
Melissa Bourg (Michigan Language Center)
Students possess stronger communication skills when they recognize their own listening styles and consider others listening styles. In this interactive workshop, participants gain unique information about listening styles, identify and discuss their own listening style, as well as complete an adaptable classroom activity to maximize student communication abilities.

Interest Sections: K-12, Post-Secondary

SLIFE to STEAM Leaders: Empower Newcomer Girls Through STEAM (AH 333)
Kawther Mohammed (Kalamazoo Public Schools), Megan Doorlag (Kalamazoo Public Schools)
See how it's possible to combine two stark marginalizations–newcomers among the ML populations, and girls within the STEAM field–to foster trailblazers of the future. The presenters will share hands-on teaching approaches they have implemented for newcomers with reading and writing in the classroom. Participants will walk away with creative approaches to teaching ML girls in the science classroom.
