    Executive Director


    • Education:   Bachelor’s in Education.  Master’s in TESOL preferred. 
    • Experience:   2 – 4 years teaching adults as well as supervising employees and providing instructional coaching.  Significant experience interfacing with communities whose first language is not English.  Experience with the K-12 systems.
    • Knowledge and Skills:   Bilingual in Spanish preferred; Experience with curriculum development and program evaluation.  Strong capacity for team leadership and engagement.  Acute cultural sensitivity.  Highly developed communication skills.


    l  Follow the model established by Toyota and the National Center for Families Learning, and the collaborative family literacy model developed by the Literacy Center.

    l  Research best practices and innovations for Family Literacy curriculum and programing.  

    l  Develop plan to ensure outcomes are achieved, relationships are nurtured, and parents are well-served and engaged.

    l  Participate in community school meetings to identify barriers and opportunities for parental engagement.

    l  Present to the public and stakeholders about program updates.

    l  Research funding opportunities to aid with sustainability and future expansion.

    l  Develop and manage program budget and participate on the Literacy Center management team.

    l  Develop and revise program evaluation in partnership with Literacy Center management team and external evaluators.

    l  Report to funders and other stakeholders on program outcomes.


    l  Recruit and hire instructional staff (at this time, AmeriCorps members).

    l  Train instructional staff and provide them with need-specific professional development opportunities.

    l  Support the coordinator in the recruitment and management of childcare workers

    l  Communicate with school personnel and KSSN coordinators.

    l  Lead learner recruitment efforts.

    l  Evaluate instructional staff.


    •     Support office culture and values that contribute toward a collaborative, inclusionary workplace.

    •     Tutor one learner in support of the Literacy Center’s mission to bring about a just and vibrant West Michigan through the power of literacy.

    l  Other duties as assigned.

    2. Contextualized English Language Instructor, Customized Workplace English (part time)


    Contextualized English Language Instructor, Customized Workplace English

     FSLA: Exempt     Pay Grade: $16.50-$25/hour


    CWE Director


    ·       Education:  MA in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), Teaching certificate with ESL endorsement, or currently working on MA in TESOL

    ·       Experience:  Experience in effective instruction, experience administering language tests and lesson development, and experience with computers.  Experience working with adults and two or more years ESL teaching experience. Experience in team teaching preferred.

    ·       Knowledge and Skills:  An ability to teach speaking, listening, reading and writing skills utilizing the context of a particular profession; to facilitate group learning; to administer and score tests; to structure learning to the English proficiency level; to instruct others in an effective manner; to develop trade-specific lesson plans; to relate to people in a warm caring manner; to prepare reports on progress and outcomes.  Must have dependable transportation.


    This posting is for an adult ESL instructor who is available May 9, 2017 to June 2, 2017, Tuesday-Friday (T-Th: 8:30-4:00pm, F: 8:30-1:00pm). The instructor will be providing ESL instruction that is contextualized to Certified Nurse Aide training. Instruction will be provided with a Certified Nurse Aide instructor provided by Grand Rapids Community College. Classes will be held at 622 Godfrey Ave SW, Grand Rapids, MI 49503.


    ESL Instruction

    ·       Instruct groups of English Language Learners at Tassell M-TEC.

    ·       Coordinate with another instructor to provide effective ESL instruction that meets the needs of both the learner and the skilled trade competencies.

    ·       Test participants for learning gains and keep progress records of participants.

    ·       Select appropriate materials and develop lesson plans tailored to the workplace.

    ·       Collaborate with the CWE director and coordinator to identify necessary curricular support for the program including classroom, learner, and team-teacher needs.

    Program Administration

    ·       Write summaries and final reports.


    • Support efforts to bring about a vibrant and just society in West Michigan through the power of literacy.
    • Support office culture and values and exhibit cultural competency.

    The English Language Center at Michigan State University is looking for ESL professionals with MA TESOL or equivalent degrees to join our team of essay raters for MSU’s English exams that are administered in Greece.

    What: Rate approximately150-250 essays; pay is HIGHLY competitive

    When: May 2017

    How: Online through a secure login from the ELC at MSU (following initial training on the MSU campus in East Lansing)

    An orientation for new raters will be conducted on the MSU campus on May 13, 2017. All raters must complete online recalibration (norming) during the week of May 22, the week following orientation. Rating will continue into June. Rating is performed online on your own computer.

    Note: Essay rating takes place twice a year. This ad is NOT for full time or part time positions, but rather to recruit experienced ESL professionals to become part of an essay rating team, some

    members of which will be called upon as needed to rate essays twice a year, corresponding to test administration dates. As stated above, this opportunity could allow you to rate between 150 and 250 essays, depending on how many test-takers actually take the test and the size of our rater pool when we complete orientation and recalibration. Raters must perform according to ELC standards in order to be considered for continuing rating opportunities. These standards include

    accurate rating and meeting deadlines.

    Cambridge Michigan Language Assessments (CaMLA), in Ann Arbor, MI, is now accepting applications for its 2017 summer internship program. The CaMLA internship program provides professional training and research opportunities for English language teaching professionals and graduate students. Successful applicants will work closely with CaMLA teams on English language assessment tasks and projects that are appropriate to their interests and skills.


    Interns will be involved in activities relating to the design and construction of language assessments. These may include item writing and review, quality assurance activities, and test development projects. Interns will also have the opportunity to contribute to a variety of test review and research activities. These activities may include research design, data collection and analysis, and the documentation of results.
