Andrew S. McCullough (Andy) was born in Michigan, but did not grow up here. After a variety of jobs and university classes following high school, Andy discovered ESL when he took a TESOL methods class at the University of Northern Iowa. Two years later, MA TESOL in hand, Andy headed to Medellín, Colombia, where he taught EFL for four years, and served as Director of Curriculum for three of those four years. Upon returning to the States, Andy found work teaching ESL at a private institute in California, and then, two years later, Andy returned to Michigan to be near his aging father. Andy came to MSU in 1992, and became a full time ESL instructor at the ELC in 1997. At the ELC, he has served in a variety of capacities, most notably working with special programs, the writing lab, and assessment. Andy is one the most senior of the full time faculty at the ELC.
Andy joined the MITESOL Board several years ago, and has served as Post-secondary SIG and Adult Education SIG leaders twice. As incoming president, he is the Conference Chair for the 2015 MITESOL Conference taking place October 9-10 at MSU.
Andy is married, has three children and one grandchild. In his free time (when he is not correcting students' writing) he enjoys time with his family, and activities like hiking, bicycling, reading, writing, watching movies, public speaking (he is a member of Toastmasters, where he served as club president for several years – now VP of Education/Treasurer), and spending time with friends. He dreams of opening his own dinner theater/B&B/pizzeria/ESL school where students learn English by serving the needs of each of those foregoing enterprises! Perhaps in warmer climate!
